Brake Master Cylinder Replacement: labor quote guide
Typical labor time (approximate)
About 1 to 2.5 hours. About 1 to 2.5 hours including a bench bleed and a full system bleed. Some need the ABS cycled with a scan tool.
Approximate only: a rough general range, not labor-guide data. Times vary widely by vehicle and condition. Check a labor guide for the exact vehicle. How we estimate
The quote buttons open the labor-quote calculator prefilled; "Start an estimate" adds a labor line to the estimate & invoice generator. Add your own rate, parts and tax.
What's involved
- Confirm a sinking pedal, fluid bypass or external leak
- rule out the calipers and lines
- Remove the lines and reservoir and unbolt the master cylinder from the booster
- Bench bleed the new unit and install it with correct pushrod clearance
- Bleed the system (and the ABS if required) and verify a firm pedal on a road test
General outline only. Follow the service information for the specific vehicle.
What changes the time
- Access around the booster and wiring
- ABS bleed procedures
- Seized line fittings
- Integrated hydraulic boosters on some vehicles
Related parts & common add-ons
- Brake fluid flush
- Brake booster if it's also faulty
- Reservoir or level sensor
- Brake inspection
Price parts with the parts markup calculator, and note findings on the inspection checklist.
FAQ
Is bench bleeding necessary?
Yes, in almost all cases. It removes air from the bores before installation and saves a lot of bleeding time.
Pedal still soft after replacement?
Check for air in the ABS unit, the caliper or wheel cylinder condition, and pedal pushrod adjustment.
Can a bad booster feel like a bad master?
They feel different. A bad booster gives a hard pedal, while a bypassing master gives a sinking pedal. Test both.
