ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement: labor quote guide

Typical labor time (approximate)

About 0.3 to 1.5 hours. Often about 0.3 to 1.5 hours. Sensors bolted into the knuckle are quick; seized sensors or ones built into the hub take longer.

Approximate only: a rough general range, not labor-guide data. Times vary widely by vehicle and condition. Check a labor guide for the exact vehicle. How we estimate

The quote buttons open the labor-quote calculator prefilled; "Start an estimate" adds a labor line to the estimate & invoice generator. Add your own rate, parts and tax.

What's involved

  1. Read the ABS codes and compare live wheel-speed data on a road test
  2. Check the wiring, connector and tone ring
  3. Remove the sensor (or hub if it's integrated) and clean the bore
  4. Install, route the wiring, clear the codes and verify readings on a road test

General outline only. Follow the service information for the specific vehicle.

FAQ

Is it always the sensor?

No. Damaged tone rings, wiring chafes, debris on magnetic sensors and failed hubs can set the same codes.

Do I need a scan tool?

Yes, to read ABS codes and compare live wheel speeds. A basic code reader often can't see ABS.

Why did the traction control light come on too?

Traction and stability control use the same wheel-speed inputs, so a bad sensor often disables them.
