Oil Pan Gasket Replacement: labor quote guide

Typical labor time (approximate)

About 1 to 8 hours. Very wide range, about 1 to 8+ hours. Some pans drop easily; others need the subframe lowered, the engine lifted or the transmission removed.

Approximate only: a rough general range, not labor-guide data. Times vary widely by vehicle and condition. Check a labor guide for the exact vehicle. How we estimate

The quote buttons open the labor-quote calculator prefilled; "Start an estimate" adds a labor line to the estimate & invoice generator. Add your own rate, parts and tax.

What's involved

  1. Confirm the leak source (the pan vs the rear main, filter, drain plug or a higher leak)
  2. Drain the oil and remove anything blocking the pan
  3. Remove the pan, clean the surfaces and install the gasket or sealant
  4. Torque in sequence, refill and check for leaks

General outline only. Follow the service information for the specific vehicle.

FAQ

Can I seal it without removing the pan?

Additive stop-leaks may slow minor leaks but aren't a repair. Quote the proper fix and let the customer decide.

How do I find the real leak source?

Clean everything and use UV dye. Oil often runs down from a valve cover or filter housing onto the pan.

Why is the range so wide?

Clearance. On some vehicles the pan is reachable in under an hour; on others the engine has to come up or the subframe has to come down.
