Ball Joint Replacement: labor quote guide

Typical labor time (approximate)

About 1 to 3 hours. Roughly 1 to 3 hours per side. Bolt-in joints are quicker; pressed-in joints, rusted knuckles or 4x4 trucks take longer.

Approximate only: a rough general range, not labor-guide data. Times vary widely by vehicle and condition. Check a labor guide for the exact vehicle. How we estimate

The quote buttons open the labor-quote calculator prefilled; "Start an estimate" adds a labor line to the estimate & invoice generator. Add your own rate, parts and tax.

What's involved

  1. Inspect for play with the suspension properly loaded or unloaded per the manufacturer's procedure
  2. Separate the joint from the knuckle
  3. Press out and press in the new joint (or replace the control arm if integrated)
  4. Torque, install a new cotter pin and align if needed

General outline only. Follow the service information for the specific vehicle.

FAQ

How do I check ball joints?

Load the suspension correctly for the design (load-carrying vs follower joint) and check vertical and horizontal play against the spec.

Is an alignment needed?

Often recommended, especially when the control arm or knuckle is disturbed.

Replace the control arm instead?

If the ball joint isn't serviceable separately, or the arm bushings are worn, replacing the arm is often better.
