Heater Core Replacement: labor quote guide

Typical labor time (approximate)

About 2 to 10 hours. Very wide, about 2 to 10+ hours. Some heater cores are accessible from under the dash; many require full dashboard removal.

Approximate only: a rough general range, not labor-guide data. Times vary widely by vehicle and condition. Check a labor guide for the exact vehicle. How we estimate

The quote buttons open the labor-quote calculator prefilled; "Start an estimate" adds a labor line to the estimate & invoice generator. Add your own rate, parts and tax.

What's involved

1. Confirm the leak (coolant smell, fogging, wet carpet) or a clog (flow test across the hoses)
2. Recover AC refrigerant if the evaporator case has to come out
3. Remove the dash or HVAC case to reach the core, then replace it
4. Reassemble, refill and bleed the cooling system, recharge AC and check operation

General outline only. Follow the service information for the specific vehicle.

What changes the time

• Full dashboard removal vs access panels
• Airbag systems and wiring
• AC case removal and refrigerant recovery
• Bleeding air from the heater circuit

Related parts & common add-ons

• Heater hoses
• Coolant flush
• Blend door actuator
• AC recharge if opened

FAQ

Can I bypass or flush instead?

A clogged core sometimes responds to flushing. A leaking core needs replacement. Bypassing loses heat and defrost, which is a safety concern.

Why such a wide range?

The design. Some vehicles have quick access, while others need the entire dash removed.

Airbag precautions?

Disable the airbag system per service information before working near airbag modules and wiring.
