AC Recharge / Compressor Replacement: labor quote guide
Typical labor time (approximate)
About 0.5 to 4 hours. An AC evacuate and recharge is often about 0.5 to 1.5 hours; compressor replacement is typically about 2 to 4+ hours, plus evacuation, recharge and any parts the manufacturer requires.
Approximate only: a rough general range, not labor-guide data. Times vary widely by vehicle and condition. Check a labor guide for the exact vehicle. How we estimate
The quote buttons open the labor-quote calculator prefilled; "Start an estimate" adds a labor line to the estimate & invoice generator. Add your own rate, parts and tax.
What's involved
- Check pressures and vent temperature, and leak-test the system
- Recover refrigerant with certified equipment
- Repair the leak or replace the compressor and the required components
- Evacuate, hold vacuum, recharge by weight and verify performance
General outline only. Follow the service information for the specific vehicle.
What changes the time
- Compressor location and access
- Flush requirements after a failure
- Electric compressors on hybrids (special oil and safety procedures)
- Leaks that need dye and a recheck visit
Related parts & common add-ons
- Receiver-drier or accumulator
- Expansion valve or orifice tube
- Condenser if contaminated
- Cabin air filter
Price parts with the parts markup calculator, and note findings on the inspection checklist.
FAQ
Why not just add refrigerant?
Low refrigerant means a leak. Leak-test (dye or an electronic detector) and quote the repair. Topping off alone often comes back.
Certification?
In the US, handling refrigerant requires EPA Section 609 certification and proper recovery equipment. Check your local rules.
What comes with a compressor?
Many compressor warranties require replacing the receiver-drier or accumulator and the expansion valve or orifice tube, and flushing. Check the parts supplier's requirements.
