Radiator Cooling Fan Replacement: labor quote guide
Typical labor time (approximate)
About 0.5 to 2.5 hours. Roughly 0.5 to 2.5 hours. Electric fan assemblies that lift out from the top are quick; ones that need the radiator or bumper removed take longer.
Approximate only: a rough general range, not labor-guide data. Times vary widely by vehicle and condition. Check a labor guide for the exact vehicle. How we estimate
The quote buttons open the labor-quote calculator prefilled; "Start an estimate" adds a labor line to the estimate & invoice generator. Add your own rate, parts and tax.
What's involved
- Confirm the fan doesn't run: command it with a scan tool and check the fuses, relays, control module and power and ground
- Remove the shroud and fan assembly
- Install the new fan (and control module if separate)
- Verify operation at temperature and with AC on
General outline only. Follow the service information for the specific vehicle.
What changes the time
- Fan control modules and PWM fans
- Clearance to the radiator and the upper core support
- Mechanical clutch fans on trucks
- Seized fan clutch nuts
Related parts & common add-ons
- Fan relay or control module
- Fan clutch on RWD trucks
- Coolant temperature sensor
- Wiring connector repair

FAQ
How do I tell whether it's the fan or the control?
Command the fan with a scan tool and check power and ground at the motor. If the motor gets power and doesn't spin, it's the fan.
What about clutch fans?
Check for excessive play, leaking fluid and whether the fan freewheels when hot. Replace the clutch if it does.
Why does the car overheat only at idle?
That's typical of a failed fan or fan clutch, because airflow at idle depends on the fan.
